On september 1st of 1988 Rob Knetsch started his first music project Novo Sibirsk with the release of his first tape with the title "While waiting". In the period between september 1988 and october 1990 Novo Sibirsk released 29 tapes.

Below you find a representation of the original tape catalog. This catalog contained a full summary of all 29 tapes. For each tape you will find all data in this catalog: the track titles, the playing time of each track, the total playing time and the release date of the tape, a short description and an image of the tape cover.

De Novo Sibirsk muziekcassette catalogus 1988 - 1990

Op 1 september 1988 startte Rob Knetsch zijn eerste muziekprojekt Novo Sibirsk met de uitgave van zijn eerste muziekcassette getiteld "While waiting". In de periode van september 1988 tot oktober 1990 heeft Novo Sibirsk 29 muziekcassettes uitgebracht.

WHILE WAITING is the first tape released by Novo Sibirsk. All tracks were composed and recorded in one week. This tape was presented on the "KLEM-dag" (an annual dutch electronic music event) of 1988. The tracks on this tape picture various situations where one waits or passes time.

IMAGINE FOUR is the third tape from a series of four of which the number of the tape was incorporated in the title. It is Novo sibirsk’s second tape which contains tracks that are about 30 minutes long. Both tracks on IMAGINE FOUR are composed and recorded in a period of two days.

THE FIFTH EDGE OF THE CLIFF is the last of a series of four of which the number of the tape was incorporated in the title. "The cliff" depicts a procession to a high cliff. "Edge" describes the emotional condition of somebody who arrived at the edge of the cliff.

FACTORY I is the first of two tapes with music based on factory noises. The tracks depict a tour through a factory. On this tape, thump- and pumpnoises were the source of inspiration. This tape was also the first on which a photograph was used for the tape cover. All tracks on FACTORY I were composed and recorded in one day.

The two tracks on KIRLEYEH originated from an experiment in which the music had to be created using only one synthesizer, without overdubbing. For this experiment an Elka Synthex synthesizer and a delay were used. A very succesfull experiment!

On the tape VISITS a guest musician is featured: Margriet Heijnis. She performs the part for the female voice on the track "Blue dream". This track depicts the downfall of a technological society. The track "The origin of usyl" originated from an experiment where only one synthe- sizer and a sampler were used, without overdubbing, recorded on a C100 tape. This track is over 100 minutes long, or to be exact: 1 hour and 43 minutes! The track is composed and recorded in a period of two days. THE ORIGIN OF USYL is the first part of a trilogy about Usyl. It is also the twentieth tape of Novo Sibirsk.

LINESCAPES OF USYL is the second part of the trilogy about Usyl. On this tape is featured as guest musician Hans van der Molen on xylophone. The question "who or what is Usyl?" is difficult to answer. During the making of THE ORIGIN OF USYL it was taken that it was a living creature. During the making of LINESCAPES OF USYL and THE CUPOLA OF USYL this changed into the idea that it was a piece of land. The music on the three tapes cover both hypotheses. The track "Chase for usyl" on EASTERN EXPOSURE is the last attempt to find an answer.

NOVO SIBIRSK LIVE is the first tape with live recordings. Although all tapes were recorded "live" and without overdubbing, the tracks on this tape were recorded live at a concert. De recordings were made in januari 1990 in the city Alkmaar in Holland. I want to thank the following persons for their help and assistance: Frank Vierstra (sound and recording), Jelle Bouwhuis (photography, stills) and Evert Hamersma (video). The first concert on (january 28th 1990) is also available on VHS videotape and DVD.
